Drain flies are often mistaken for fruit flies.

Drain Fly Test
- Thoroughly dry off all sinks, bathtubs, and floor drain areas, before going to bed.
- Place a strip of clear sticky tape, sticky side down, across the centre of each drain. Do not completely cover the drain opening.
- Leave the sticky tape traps in place overnight or over the weekend if possible.
- If you find flies stuck to the tape, you know that drain is one of the breeding areas for drain flies.
If you do not find flies, repeat the test for at least 4 more nights to provide for variations in the breeding cycle.
One you have confirmation of a drain fly infestation you can begin the process of eliminating waste matter that has accumulated on the sides of the drain. Note: it is this drain waste matter which aid drain fly harbourage and reproduction.
Treatment for Drain Flies
The most effective method to eradicate drain flies is to clean the pipes to rid the gelatinous rotting, organic matter which will eliminate the larval food source.
Please Note: Drain flies live and breed in the sludge just above water level.
This can be a messy job in an area bacterium thrives it is advised that you wear gloves and disposed of in a plastic bad after the treatment has been implemented.
- Remove Drain Covers
- Scrape away any sludge.
- Using a scrubbing brush, hot water & soap, scrub away the sludge as far as you can go down.
- Scrub the drain covers, especially the underside facing of the drain.
- Pour hot water down the drain.
- Pour biodegradable bleach into a spray bottle, and spray the drain, making sure the sides of the drain have been soaked.
- Pour a good amount of bleach into the drain.
- If possible, do not use the drain for 4-6hrs.

- Wash kitchen counters and surfaces daily with soap and water. Wipe up sauces and spills immediately, look under heavy appliances.
- Keep kitchen sinks and drains clean, if dirty the residue can attract them. If you think your kitchen sink drain is where they’re gathering, pour boiling water down the drain each day.
- Do not leave dirty dishes out.
- Look under furniture for any food esp fruit scraps.
- Don’t leave beverage bottles, cans, glasses laying around.
- Tie up and remove garbage from the kitchen daily
- Rinse out all cans and bottles before placing in the recycling bins.
- Keep food wrapped in plastic or in the refrigerator.
- On hotter days bags of potatoes and onions are quicker to go bad, rotting potatoes and onions will attract fruit flies.
- Keep pantry shelves clean of all drips and spills.
