Treatments for Fruit Flies 

There are many treatments that work that you can implement yourself. Even though the life span of a fruit fly is 10 days, if not taken care of, further infestations can occur as the female fruit fly lays her eggs in fresh fruit and vegetables. The life cycle continues. 

There are 2 ways to treat for fruit flies: 

  1. To spray fly spray in the air at the end of the workday, when everyone has left or at home, spray in the air when you are sure no one will be in the house for 2 hours
  2. The other method is trapping as described below.

Apple Cider Treatment 

  • Pour about 7cm of apple cider vinegar into a small clean container. 
  • Add a few drops dish-washing detergent. 
  • Fruit flies will be attracted to the smell of the vinegar but get trapped in the dish detergent. 
  • Ensure that apple cider vinegar is used not white vinegar. 

Alcohol/fruit-based Treatment 

  • Place beer or wine in a container 
  • Cover the container tightly with plastic wrap and punch small holes in the wrap. 
  • Fruit flies crawl into the containers, attracted by the smell, and become trapped. 
  • A piece of fruit in a plastic-wrap covered container also works. 
  • Set the containers around the house, wherever fruit flies are spotted. 
  • They are more likely to be trapped during the day. 
  • Empty the containers are they become full of the fruit flies and put more solution into the containers around the house until the problem is eliminated. 

Peppermint Extract Treatment 

  • After cleaning, make a wick out of a paper towel. 
  • Dip the wick into the peppermint extract. 
  • Set it on the counter. 
  • The smell will repel the fruit flies. 

Steps for Treating Drains affected with fruit flies. 

  • Pour biodegradable bleach down sink. 
  • Allow to sit for 40 minutes. 
  • Pour hot water down the drains to flush.
