RATS

The two main types of rats that cause concern in the Philippines are the Brown Rat and the Black Rat. These are commonly found in businesses and homes.

The Brown Rat

Digs burrows along foundations and under debris piles, often found in basements. Can enter homes through toilet pipes.

APPEARANCE 

  • Grows up to 40 cm in length. 
  • The tail is shorter than the head and body. 
  • Weighs up to 500g. 
  • Has as a blunt nose and small ears. 
  • Has a thicker body than the black rat. 

LIFECYCLE & FEEDING HABITS 

  • Produce 7–8 young per litter. 
  • Can have 3–6 litters per year. 
  • Gestation period: 3 weeks. 
  • From birth to sexual maturity 10 – 12 weeks 
  • Omnivorous, and prefer to feed on cereals.

The Black Rat

Nests in attics, wall voids, hollow trees. Typically enters the home from trees or power lines. Prefers fruit but will eat all kinds of foods. Prefers to travel off the ground.

  • The tail is shorter than the head and body. 
  • Weighs up to 200g. 
  • Has as a pointed nose and large ears. 
  • Has a slender body. 

LIFECYCLE & FEEDING HABITS 

  • Produce 5–10 young per litter. 
  • Can have 3–6 litters per year. 
  • Gestation period: 3 weeks. 
  • From birth to sexual maturity 12 – 16 weeks 
  • Good climbers 
  • Preferred food is moist fruits.
