German cockroaches tend to live in food commercial properties and condos where there is an easy supply of food and water.
German cockroaches can move into a new location by hitching a ride on soft drink cartons, egg cartons, beer cases, potatoes, onions, used furniture and more. During the summertime, they are actively moving from one location to another.
German cockroaches can quickly increase their populations and live in all rooms of the home, most especially the bathrooms and kitchen. They’re a real nuisance because they damage books and wallpaper as well as fouling food. They eat the glue found on furniture, and they give off a nasty-smelling odour.
APPERANCE
German cockroaches have a flat, oval shape, long antennas and spiny legs.
In the early stages of a German cockroaches’ life span, they still look like adults but are only smaller and don’t have developed wings.
Adult German cockroaches appear to have light tan or have a medium brown colour. The only difference is its shield behind its head. It’s got two dark stripes, which are separated by one lighter stripe. These stripes run the entire distance of the cockroach’s body. They measure around 1.27 centimetres to 1.58 centimetres long with wings (although they don’t generally fly). The entire stomach region of the female German cockroach is covered by its wings; the wings of the male cover all but the stomach tip.
The male German cockroach has a light brown colour and looks like a boat; females have a darker colour with a round posterior.
Young German cockroaches, known as nymphs, don’t have wings. They are practically black although they do have one light stripe that divides to black bands that run down the middle of its back.
The egg capsules have a light tan colour and measure no more than 0.7 cm long.
HABITS & LIFECYLE
Typically, cockroaches hide during the day – in closets, cracks of closets, cabinets or pantries and behind baseboard moulding. They can also be found under dishwashers, refrigerators and stoves. If many roaches are seen in the day, you can bet the population is big.
The activity level of both the adults and nymphs is high, and they can scurry quickly.
This cockroach needs moisture and can travel up to 4 meters from their home to find water and food. However, they prefer to stay in the shadows, as not to be seen. Without a food or water source, the adult cockroach can die within a couple of weeks. With just water as a source, they will live for up to a month.

- Clean every part of your home that you can – sinks, refrigerators, stoves, cabinets, food storage bins, pantry shelves.
- Clean spilt food or beverages up right away.
- Don’t leave food scraps on dirty dishes and on countertops during the overnight hours.
- Food should be kept in tightly sealed containers.
- Cans and bottles are rinsed before placed in the trash.
- Have the garbage containers moved away from the home or building.
- Put leftover pet food away.
